Bernard BUFFET

French painter Bernard Buffet was born in Paris in 1928. His parents ran a paint shop and he began painting at a young age. He was admitted to the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1945 and studied under Henri Matisse.

He first came to public attention in 1947 with his painting "The Suicidal Automobile." His early work was often compared to that of Jean Dubuffet and he was associated with the "New School of Paris."

Buffet's work is characterized by thick black lines and dark colors. He often painted scenes of death and despair. In 1958, he was awarded the Prix de la Critique.
